Swinging further left, we see the memorial to Captain Cook - a Whitby kid!  Just to the left is the jaw-bone of a whale arch.  It doesn't look like an arch, because we are at right angles to it, but it is an arch which straddles the footpath!  The original whale jaw bone arch was erected in 1853, but after more that 100 years had seriously deteriorated. It was replaced in 1963 by the ones seen here, from a 113-ton Fin Whale killed by a Norwegian whaling ship.
