9. By now, two warders have appeared and given the intruders a good talking to, but it is really too late. The outgoing tide, on which the seals usually retreat, has receded too far and only two seals ventured onto land. The consequences of this can be more far reaching than would appear to the casual observer. Basking is an important part of a seal's daily routine. Only when they are at rest do they a) digest the food they have eaten, and b) let their muscles recover from hours of battling against the strong sea currents. |
