60163 Tornado: The A1 class was designed by Arthur Peppercorn, Chief Engineer of the LNER, but actually constructed after the formation of British Railways, at Doncaster in 1948-49. They were an evolution of Nigel Gresley's successful A3 class (incuding Flying Scotsman) and A4 class (incuding Mallard), and gained a reputation as the best steaming locos on BR.
