This class of 4-6-0 engines was introduced in 1934 by the LMS, to a design by William Stanier, their Chief Engineer. They were in the Class 5 power rating, and became known as Stanier "Black Fives". A total of 842 were built either by the LMS (at Crewe, Derby and Horwich Works), by the Vulcan Foundry, or by Armstrong Whitworth, with construction continuing into BR days right up to 1952. This one was built by Armstrong Whitworth at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1935, as LMS No.5212, becoming No.45212 under BR. It survived right up to the end of steam in 1968. |
